After filing a trademark application, TotallyMoney community member, Sian Meades, received an official- looking letter from the European Institute for Economy and Commerce – including an invoice and giro slip. At first glance, Sian innocently assumed she had to pay the £479.65 to complete the processing of her trademark application.
Trouble is, this wasn’t the case at all. Only upon reading the fine print did Sian realise that this was not an official request, nor was the payment required. So, Sian complained to the Consumer Office. However, she was informed that, because the small print disclosed that this payment was not official, there was no real legal issue.
Sian shared her experience in TotallyMoney’s blog community pages. Other people commented that they’d received the same letter and were similarly confused.
If you’ve ever filed a trademark application or plan to, learn more about Sian’s experience with the dubious Trademark letter – and the ongoing Radio 5 investigation. Even if you aren’t involved with trademarks, take a look at Sian’s original post, a cautionary tale for all consumers about taking the time to read the fine print.
