Annual housing starts reached 98,250 in the 12 months to December 2011, down by 4% compared with the same period of 2010.

That is according to the latest figures from the Communities and Local Government department.

However, the figures also show annual housing completions in England totalled 109,020 in the 12 months to September 2011, an increase of 6% compared with the 12 months to December 2010.

Meanwhile, housing completions in England, when seasonally adjusted, increased in the last quarter of 2011, up 2% from 26,180 in the September quarter to 26,730.

This could impact upon property investors and those looking to buy to let homes.

The figures reveal seasonally adjusted house building starts stood at 25,240 in the December quarter of 2011 – some 6% higher than in the September quarter.

This was also 74% above the trough in the March quarter of 2009, but 48% below the December quarter of 2005.
